Investigating shapes

LOTS OF JUNK PACKAGING!
It's funny how empty boxes and containers are such a wonderful source of learning! All sort of shapes and sizes for the children to stack, line up, balance and explore.

The children had fun using shapes in a range of activities in which there were plenty of opportunities to use shape names as well as use words such as long, short, tall, straight, flat.

AN INDUSTRIOUS FRIDAY AFTERNOON
The children all said they felt tired this afternoon, but it didn't stop them working hard. It was very amusing to watch and listen to them as they chatted away like a senior citizens' knitting circle!  This was a self chosen activity that really developed well with the children coming up with imaginative ideas of what they were creating, as well as good fine motor skills practice.

AND WHAT ABOUT OUTDOORS THIS WEEK?
The weather may have been wet, cold and windy but for three and four year olds it simply gives even more exciting learning opportunities!
Muddy water with added leaves, twigs and stones engaged these children for a long time and many things were "washed"!

It has been especially pleasing to see the children building friendships and hearing them developing their imaginative play through wonderful storylines - there were many monster chases and children being captured and freed this week!

When Pudsey came to visit!

HELLO PUDSEY!
On Tuesday Scott Dalton, from Radio Lincolnshire, came to visit us with Pudsey Bear. They were on their charity cycle ride for Children in Need .
We made spotty flags to wave and we joined the rest of the school to welcome our special visitors.

On Friday we supported Children in Need by dressing in lots of spots! We brought money to donate.

                 Don't we look fabulous!

We enjoyed choosing cakes to buy which had been donated by lovely parents and carers in the school.

We also brought pennies to put on a giant picture of Pudsey. Little Conkers were the first class to do this - I'm sure Pudsey must have been almost covered by the end of the day!

It's great to help other children who don't have all the lovely things we do, and to have loads of fun doing it.

One of the older children came and told us that over £300 had already been raised and that was before everyone had bought their cakes!

What a lot going on this week!

EXPLORING LIGHT, COLOUR AND REFLECTION
Inside the dark tent children spent a great deal of time looking very closely at objects.

The mirrors fascinated the children, and there was a lot of gazing at themselves!

PRACTISING NUMBER SKILLS
Matching numerals was fun as the children "fed" them to the animals.

Counting accurately all the number 8s.

There were also opportunities to order numerals.

FANTASTIC FIREWORKS ART

Superb hand eye coordination and control - not one bead escaped onto the floor!

INVESTIGATING SOUNDS OUTDOORS
Tuning into sounds is really important for children in their development towards hearing sounds in words when they begin to learn to read.
This activity stimulated lots of discussion about differences in the sounds heard on different surfaces.

Next week looks like it is going to be exciting too - Pudsey Bear is on his travels...
